One Film A Day: Shortcomings

Writer's picture: Mohnish RajakumaranMohnish Rajakumaran

This film was one that I've had on my watchlist for some time now and finally getting to watch this was really great. I honestly didn't think I'd like this film as much as I do.

DAY 6 - 5/11/2023

Shortcomings (2023) was a film that came out just this year directed by Randall Park. Yes, THAT Randall Park. The actor extraordinaire showed off his directing chops in what I think is a severely underrated film and just might be an underdog for my Top 10 for 2023.

This film follows a struggling California filmmaker who contemplates his romantic future when his girlfriend moves to New York for an internship.

The filmmaker, played by the immensely talented Justin H. Min was a very relatable character and the performances from the entire cast were tremendous. The film wasn't afraid to be quiet, funny or even melodramatic when it needed to be. I can see myself rewatching this film for sure. It's light-hearted but heavy at times, funny and sad all in one.

There is this inherent chemistry within this cast that I just can't help but feel when watching this film. The lesson here for me anyway, is that the better chemistry a cast has, the more synonymous their performances are.

The honesty in the dialogue, the emotions and expressions in this film were out of this world but above it all were the interactions between characters in this film. I don't think I believed more that these people on screen were "best friends" or "lovers" etc.

Kudos to Randall Park for mastering the art of cameos. He did it so tastefully and without skimping on the character's substance in the film too. An overall pleasure to watch.

My Rating: 8.5/10

Thank you all for reading!
