One Film A Day: A Haunting In Venice

DAY 16 - 15/11/2023

Today's film was a rewatch of what might be one of the most ingenious films of the year in my humble opinion.

The Hercule Poirot revival under the watchful eye of Sir Kenneth Branagh had seen a serious downturn after the whole Armie Hammer fiasco and how the pandemic affected the numbers of the previous film, Death On The Nile (2022). However, the way the trilogy has come full circle and with this film, A Haunting in Venice (2023) has brought back Poirot into the light even as dimly lit as this film is.

It was the most "textbook" film as far as how the horror formula works. One location, compelling yet suspicious characters all of whom could seem guilty which is where the mystery aspect comes in. This does give the film a rather 'safe' label, but it also shows that sticking to certain filmmaking principles for a sense of stability in a franchise can sometimes be a good thing.

My Rating: 8.5/10.
