Dear Film Buffs...Watch Anime

I have met many a film buff who is sadly lacking in knowledge about the anime arts. Why is this important for my fellow filmmakers? I can't say.

But what I will say is this. The chances for inspiration are few and far between for many of us in the arts. There's that saying, that inspiration is all around us. I agree. But looking for that inspiration is harder than knowing it's there.

So with that in mind, I have decided to compile another list of some anime that I feel might be a great way to start watching anime for those film buffs who haven't seen any anime beyond Ghibli films.

Terror in Resonance

Terror in Resonance, directed by Shinichirō Watanabe, offers film buffs a gripping narrative intertwining themes of terrorism, identity, and morality. With its innovative storytelling, complex characters, top-notch animation, captivating soundtrack by Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop), and timely social commentary on government surveillance and the consequences of trauma, the series stands out as a thought-provoking exploration of contemporary issues. Cinematic references further enrich the viewing experience, making Terror in Resonance a must-watch for those seeking depth and innovation in anime storytelling.

91 Days

91 Days presents film buffs with a gripping tale set during the Prohibition era, following a young man seeking vengeance in a world of organized crime. Directed by Hiro Kaburagi, the series excels in its noir-inspired storytelling, complex characters, and intricate plot twists. With its gritty animation style, atmospheric soundtrack, and exploration of themes such as loyalty, betrayal, and justice, 91 Days offers a captivating viewing experience reminiscent of classic gangster films. It's a must-watch for those drawn to immersive narratives and period dramas with a dark edge. It's very reminiscent of the film, Road To Perdition.

Monster

Monster created by acclaimed Mangaka, Naoki Urasawa, beckons film aficionados with its gripping psychological thriller narrative. Set in a meticulously crafted world, the series follows a brilliant surgeon's quest to stop a malevolent force he once saved. Renowned for its intricate plot, morally ambiguous characters, and deep exploration of human nature, Monster captivates with its dark and thought-provoking storyline. With its masterful animation, haunting soundtrack, and profound themes of morality, guilt, and redemption, it stands as a masterpiece of the anime medium. For fans of suspenseful dramas and psychological depth, Monster is an essential watch, offering a journey into the darkest recesses of the human psyche.

Millenium Actress

Millennium Actress, directed by Satoshi Kon, beckons film enthusiasts with its mesmerizing blend of reality and fiction. Through the lens of a documentary filmmaker, the film chronicles the life of a legendary actress, weaving together her cinematic roles with her journey. Renowned for its innovative storytelling, seamless animation, and emotional depth, Millennium Actress captivates with its exploration of memory, love, and the power of storytelling. With its evocative soundtrack and stunning visuals, the film offers a transcendent viewing experience that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. For those enamoured with cinematic artistry and narrative ingenuity, Millennium Actress is an essential masterpiece that celebrates the magic of cinema itself.

These four are just a taste to get you film buffs into the wide world of anime. Enjoy. Thank you for reading.
