This list only includes films that i've seen from January 2021 till June 2021.
This list will be relatively spoiler-free so rest assured. This list of films that I have shortlisted are films that I personally feel are a great watch and also could hopefully provide you with more choices when deciding to watch a film this year.
Number 5,
Wrath of Man. Guy Ritchie's latest joint stars Jason Statham as H a man who seeks revenge for the murder of his son. Yeah I know this sounds like your run-of-the-mill action flick with little story or substance. Just another John Wick knock-off probably. While it does have moments of action-filled scenes that are spectacles in their own right, Guy Ritchie's non - linear storytelling style, as well as his beautifully written peripheral dialogue that sounds almost musical, are a breath of fresh air in this film. While it isn't his best work, it's far from his worst. Wrath of Man, most definitely give it a watch if your in the mood for an action-packed film that you won't regret watching.

Moving on to Number 4,
Zack Snyder's latest film, Army of The Dead, brings us back to his early filmmaking roots into a genre that arguably made him the director he is. If anything, it's good to see a filmmaker not be afraid to return to their roots with a more experienced eye and better-refined technique. Starring Dave Bautista amongst a slew of funny, dry and corny characters this film reminded me a lot of the zombie games I used to play way back when. The film follows this team led by Dave Bautista's character as they go to Vegas on a mission to retrieve money that's been left in a safe. Only catch? Vegas is now a zombie kingdom. And yes, there is a zombie tiger in this movie. I don't think I can sell it more than that. All you zombie fans or post-apocalyptic world fans do check this out! And yes this is the Snyder Cut.

Army of The Dead (2021)
Number 3 brings us back to the action genre, but this time it's action, comedy.
Nobody starring Bob Odenkirk whom you may know from hit series like Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul, was primarily known as a comedy actor. But this notch in his filmography proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he does possess those coveted action-star chops. Nobody is basically a John Wick ripoff with a serious injection of dark humour. It is a tribute to the action-comedy genre in the best way possible. It breaks no new ground, it's completely predictable and so so cliche which in the craziest way, is what makes it work. I HIGHLY recommend checking this film out. Host a watch party with your friends and break out the popcorn cause this film is a good time that'll kick your ass.

Nobody (2021)
Onto Number 2,
A John M. Chu & Lin-Manuel Miranda production, In The Heights, is a musical that uses the old style of characters bursting into songs but takes it to another level. In a slightly similar fashion to Les Miserables (2012) directed by Tom Hooper, the characters have moments where they converse via song. Literally, they are singing their words. Which sounds really tacky and corny I know but it's the kind of bright and lively film filled with an entry of optimism for the future that we so desperately need. Throw away your cynicism and watch this film with an open mind. It is an acquired taste for sure but one that I myself thoroughly enjoyed.

In The Heights (2021)
And the number 1 spot goes to,
Minamata. While the film did come out in 2020, it was not available worldwide till 2021, and thus many of us wouldn't have had the opportunity to experience this in cinemas, unfortunately. Minamata stars Johnny Depp as W. Eugene Smith a war photographer that goes to Japan to a small town known as Minamata which is ground zero for some of the most atrocious violations of human rights that are still happening today. Based on a true story, the small town of Minamata is the victim of mass mercury poisoning. A large corporation dumps its toxic waste into the Minamata water supply in order to save money. This film also recreates one of the most famous photographs ever taken. "Tomoko In Her Bath". This film made me cry inconsolably and upon watching it a second time it truly is a work of art. It is a film that every aspiring photographer should watch. The importance of taking a photo is brushed aside by our benign comments of "it's just a photo" but in this film, it really shows the responsibility each and every photographer has. No matter how famous or well known, No matter what equipment they have. I could go on and on about this film but ill draw the line here. All I can say is watching this film is an experience and not something you watch in the background, or while using your phone. There is no better way to spit on this film than by watching it that way. It deserves your full attention and it will repay you with a gut-punch of emotion that you aren't expecting.
